Mum, Dad – are you eco?

The answer to the above question should start with an explanation – what does it mean to be “eco? It is a very fashionable and increasingly used term, but rarely used in a good meaning context and not in harmony with human behavior. Where did this concept come from and what is its significance today? For the opinion, we asked the declared eco-moms.

If you hear the “eco” comes to mind with ecology – it is the most correct. However, there are many definitions describing this science, taking into account, among other things, the range of interests, research methods and the field of its operation. Before declaring – I am “eco”, it is worth considering what this status will be manifested and what elements of lifestyle will prove it. The goal that should guide the pursuit of the “eco” philosophy – because that is how it can be described – is primarily promoting the lifestyle with care for what will remain for the next generations. Passing the idea of this philosophy is closely related to ecological education. From an early age. Fortunately, the need to live in harmony with nature in the modern world is growing. This is due to frequent environmental disasters – smaller and larger. For the good of the environment, both inanimate and biotic, a few activities that would contribute to its protection would be sufficient. What, above all, determines the attitude of eco? Magda speaks – first of all Kuba and Frank’s mother, physiotherapist, instructor of Pilates method, advocate of Alexander’s method. “Attitude, make awareness of how much nature, interest, lifestyle, respect, and protection give us. This method is simple: it is enough to want to open your eyes and act. Children learn among the others, through imitation, conversation, doing certain things together – it is worth educating them to live in harmony with the environment, because every human being is an inseparable part of it “. Hoping that the majority of parents, especially future parents will show their willingness to draw inspiration from eco-supporters, let’s summarize what components of behaviors are worth paying attention to. Because the topic is extremely broad, let’s focus on nutrition.

Good shopping choices

In the mobilization to work on a consumer attitude in which every purchase is verified, finances are important. However, this is definitely a different dimension than that which the adherents of the pro-ecological eating style are covered with but with some resistance to it – due to the widespread thought of ecology as an expensive undertaking. Of course – putting passive houses, buying hybrid cars or getting food from organic farming on a daily basis is certainly a burden. But that’s not the point. Saving, moderating, segregating, reusing and learning good management do not require a lot of financial effort. The subject of nutrition remains among the most important, to everyone’s well-known statement, “you are what you eat.” It is not worth sliding through this topic. It should be explored. It is important, however, that contrary to appearances, not only regular visits to shops with so-called health conscious food shapes awareness of proper nutrition. It is also significantly influenced by the preservation of certain rules when preparing meals, eating them, and correlating with physical activity. Being “eco” is not just about shopping at ecological stores or bio-bazaars. It is also necessary to acquire knowledge about which products are unprocessed, have a small amount of additives and how to prepare them to obtain a safe, tasty, healthy meal. Then you can call it “eco”. Interestingly, recent research conducted by TNS Polska “Organic food in Poles’ opinions” shows that already 30 percent. Polish people buy organic food. This is a fairly good result, unfortunately not yet fully satisfactory, but due to the fact that these products are not for every budget. It is true that in Poland, where organic farming is in the beginner phase, the difference in the prices of conventional products and those from organic farming is greater than in other European countries. However, it is forecasted that with the development of the distributor network, the increasing demand and growth of primary producers, these prices will be reduced. Another issue is the choice of organic food due to the taste – for Poles, health remains in the second place. However, having in mind the care for the health of children, their proper development and functioning in the present times, maybe it is worth changing this order and look around
example for spelled flour or make fries from rutabaga? Kasia Nowak – mother of 9-month-old Juliusz, founder of a company providing eco-vegetables and fruits, talks about the choices of her clients: “Many of our customers are moms who buy organic vegetables and fruits for children. Others just follow fashion. Both groups usually choose the basic ones: apples, potatoes, carrots and dill. However, my mission is to educate customers to make simple dishes using little-known vegetables. Furora frites made from perennial (I recommend it!). Now the tops are kale chips – a great smuggling of greens for kids! ” What else is important in the subject of eco-nutrition? Labels – you do not need to spend many hours studying them. All you have to do is know a few items that avoid doing a lot in favor of health. Although then – colloquially – it is said about the so-called “Healthy food” and confuses with the concept of organic food – certified and covered by certain standards, while the first one is named for marketing and illegal. If the idea of buying eco-products appears, the basis for all choices is to find the certificate. It is important. It informs that the production of this food does not use chemical plant protection products and artificial fertilizers – only compost, manure and mineral components naturally occurring in nature. In addition, in animal nutrition mainly feed from an organic farm is used or organic fodder is purchased with an acceptable admixture of conventional fodder. Organic food products do not contain artificial colors, fragrances or preservatives. Knowing these aspects, it will be easy to do homework: familiarize yourself with the composition of traditional, commonly recommended yoghurts, cheese for children, and then breakfast cereals. For those who want more juices. The topic for further development next time. Packaging is also worth attention – it would be best to buy products without unnecessary materials. Firstly, because of the potential migration of substances to food, secondly – why produce waste? The fact remains that some of the items can not be purchased without packaging, of course. Then you can choose one that can be recycled. The most important principle – minimalism, supported correctly by the words of Ludwig Mies van der Roche: “Less is more”. Nowadays, with the availability of many services, attractions, objects, it is difficult to keep moderation and fight against consumerism. Fortunately, there are entities that attempt to combat the state determined by the verb “to have.” This was the reason for the movement known as downshifting. It consists simply in simplifying life! Less stress, less goods, more time, inner harmony and complacency – is not it encouraging?
